Chick-Fil-A Offers Fish Sandwich During Lent 2019

The Atlanta-based fast food giant Chick-Fil-A, notorious for only serving chicken, will return a food item to the menu during the season of Lent. Those who want to enjoy the restaurant during the season of fasting from meat can now enjoy a flaky fried cod sandwich. Lent, which lasts 46 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, is a period of self-sacrifice observed by Christians and some fast from eating meat on Fridays or for the entire 46 days.

Chick-Fil-A began selling its fish sandwich Ash Wednesday, March 6, for those who love the Christian-based fast food restaurant but want to fast during Lent. The fish sandwich will be sold until Saturday, April 20 – the day before Easter. The Chick-Fil-A Fish Sandwich will be served in select restaurants across the U.S.

The sandwich will be served alongside the Deluxe Fish and boxed 2- and 3-count fish entrees and meals, served with the restaurant’s signature waffle fries. The Fish Sandwich is 370 calories and the Deluxe is 430 while the 2- and 3-count boxes are 190 and 280 calories respectively.

Chick-Fil-A introduced the fish offerings during Lent since 2016. The company states the sandwich is not available nationwide and some restaurants may not serve the product every day. Chick-Fil-A also has a website in which patrons can check if their local restaurant serves the fish sandwich.

Check to see which locations will be participating. According to Christian Post, Chick-Fil-A is not the first that the dietary regulations of Lent have influenced a fast food menu, as McDonald’s filet-o-fish sandwich owes its existence to the fish-on-Friday rule.

According to McDonald’s, the Filet-O-Fish dates back to 1962 Franchisee Lou Groen from Cincinnati, Ohio. Groen’s restaurant was located in a predominantly Roman Catholic neighborhood, and he noticed a decrease in sales on Fridays.

“With determination and a knack for thoroughness, Groen convinced McDonald’s to test a breaded whitefish sandwich to help satisfy customers who abstained from eating meat on Fridays in observance of Lent,” McDonald’s wrote in a blog. “ At first, McDonald’s executives were not certain about adding fish to the menu, which required a more complicated cooking process. As a matter of fact, McDonald’s Founder Ray Kroc had plans for what he called the Hula Burger ― a slice of grilled pineapple and cheese on a bun.”

According to the post, Kroc made a deal with Groen that they would sell the Hula Burger and the Filet-O-Fish on a Friday, and whichever sandwich sold the most would be added to the permanent menu.

“Kroc was so convinced that his Hula Burger would outsell the Filet-O-Fish that he made a side bet with his first grillman Fred Turner that the loser would buy the winner a new suit,” the post stated. “The final score? Hula Burger: 6, Filet-O-Fish: 350.” wrote that Chick-Fil-A has been voted America’s favorite fast food restaurant, although the fast food joint has taken some heat for its owner’s beliefs in recent years and is still dogged by accusations that the chain is homophobic. Fortune stated that the company is expanding marketing tactics and continually growing, despite the owner’s beliefs.

“Despite that, it continues to grow, recently announcing an international expansion. It’s also leaning in more and more to holiday promotions,” Fortune reported. “Earlier this year, it offered a heart-shaped box of chicken nuggets for Valentine’s Day.”
