The delivery services company FedEx is planning to start trials on its brand new SameDay Bot. A robot developed in collaboration with DEKA Development & Research Corp, for delivering small packages through its FedEx SameDay® City service. Which represents a new and innovative solution to retailers, helping them make same-day and last mile deliveries to their customers.

Thanks to this device, retailers will be able to offer same day delivery to their nearby customers and send the goods by Bot to their homes or businesses right away.

According to FedEx, over 60 percent of merchants’ customers in the US, live within three miles of a store location, showing that this is an opportunity for the on-demand local delivery.

“The FedEx SameDay Bot is an innovation designed to change the face of local delivery and help retailers efficiently address their customers’ rising expectations,” said Brie Carere, executive vice-president and chief marketing and communications officer for FedEx. “The bot represents a milestone in our ongoing mission to solve the complexities and expense of same-day, last-mile delivery for the growing e-commerce market in a manner that is safe and environmentally friendly”.

With the help of LiDAR sensors and Machine Learning Algorithms, the robot can navigate unpaved surfaces, curbs, and even steps, delivering safely small packages to customers.

“The FedEx SameDay Bot represents the next chapter in our long legacy of delivering innovation and outstanding service, supported by an already existing FedEx logistics ecosystem,” said Brian Phillips, CEO of FedEx Office. He also pointed: “We are excited to bring this technology to address new markets and better support our customers. The companies who have provided feedback on its potential use have been instrumental in ensuring we are looking toward the future of e-commerce”.

FedEx is not the only company trying to implement new forms of short-range delivery. Several Startups and well-known companies like Amazon have started tests with similar technology, although it is not yet clear if these robots will be profitable to implement at scale, or if they can be safely integrated into all cities, complying with current legislation.

The delivery services company currently offers the FedEx SameDay® City service for packages under 150 lbs, operating in 32 markets and 1,900 cities using branded conventional vehicles and uniformed FedEx personnel. The FedEx SameDay Bot will complement the FedEx SameDay City service.

Fedex says the SameDay Bot will be refined in the next months to meet safety standards and regulations, and the specific needs of customers.
