Most of us have experience at least one major crisis in our lifetimes. The sudden loss of a mother or father or sibling, unexpected unemployment or loss of our business… Life can take an unexpected turn at any given moment. The city of Goodyear, AZ has structured a program to help out when one of it’s residents is down and out. The Fill-A-Need program has been established to help spread holiday cheer to those in a position of duress. City employees, local residents and businesses in Goodyear donate gifts and donations to families in need who cannot provide for their children.
The Fill-A-Need program supplies these families with anything from household goods to toiletries to gifts and school supplies. Sometimes even simple household items are a treasure for those in the depths of financial struggle. Goodyear strives to leave no man, woman or child in a state of abandonment, especially during the holidays. Everyone deserves a season of cheer and time spent with loved ones instead of worrying about how to supply their families with basic needs.
Last year the Goodyear residents supplied over 50 families with needed clothes, food, and perishables. Local Macy’s, Marshalls and Walmart were among the donating forces last year. Referrals and applications for families in need are asked for each year in September. Applications are reviewed in October, so if you would like to apply or refer a family please make sure to do so by the end of September. A staff member of the Fill-A-Need project then goes to visit the homes of these families and access eligibility and the greatest need that each individual family would most benefit from.
Donations by Goodyear residents and businesses are accepted all the way up to December 5 each year. Donations include unwrapped gifts, toys, monetary donations, gift wrapping supplies, and more. Volunteers gather to wrap gifts and create food boxes. They then get to deliver these items to the recipient families in need. Goodyear is always seeking volunteers for this event. What a gratifying and hands on experience! Even if you are unable to donate money or gifts, you can donate your time to help make the Fill-A-Need project run smoothly. Giving back, especially around the holidays is important to Goodyear residents and the recipient families are extremely grateful for this city program.
