In the latest update of the Samsung Galaxy Fold saga, Reuters reported that customers who pre-ordered the nearly $2,000 phone will receive a refund if the device is not shipped by May 31.

“If we do not hear from you and we have not shipped by May 31, your order will be canceled automatically,” the South Korean tech giant’s U.S. subsidiary told Galaxy Fold pre-order customers in an email late on Monday, which was confirmed by a Samsung spokeswoman by Mac Rumors.

Samsung announced the indefinite delay of the phone’s release April 26 when media reviewers noticed bugs during its review test launch. Several of the reviewers posted to Twitter images of the foldable screen glitching, going completely black or having an issue with the display. One of the reasons the phone had such issues was due to a thin, protective layer of the screen being peeled off by some of the media testers.

Others, experienced issues without peeling away the protective layer. Most new phones come with a plastic covering for the user to remove. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold was supposed to be a love letter to consumers for its decade of innovative smartphones not a blinky unusable device.

The development of the $2,000 phone began in 2011 when the company debuted prototypes of a foldable technology. The phone took an additional eight years to develop to make sure the product was ready for the market, according to Eui-Suk Chung, Executive Vice President and Head of Software and Artificial Intelligence at Samsung’s Mobile Communications business.

“The Galaxy Fold’s software was designed to provide streamlined usage for various scenarios,” Chung said. “When the user folds it, they can take a quick look at smartphone notifications and other essentials. Then, when it is unfolded, the user can use the larger immersive display for higher quality viewing on the apps they require and in-depth multitasking.”

The fold is supposed to be the world’s first AMOLED Infinity Flex Display foldable phone. Samsung collaborated with Google and Android developer to make sure the series were available for the Fold.

According to Market Watch, Samsung’s first-quarter profits took a tumble due to the postponed roll-out of the world’s first foldable phone. The first-quarter net profits showed a 57 percent decline from 2018. As Samsung grapples with the delay, damage control and fixing the bugs with the device, it will struggle to gain consumer trust with the device. likens the Fold’s problems to Samsung’s snafu with the Note 7 release when batteries overheated and exploded, causing the electronic giant to recall the device.

According to Mac Rumors, Samsung has said it plans to make at least 1 million Galaxy Fold handsets in the first year of production, compared to the total 300 million phones it produces annually on average.

“It originally closed pre-orders for the device early because of ‘high demand,’” Mac Rumors reported.
