The new device comes for a price of $49.99 and has twice the storage as its predecessor — 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage with the option of additional storage expansion up to 512 GB through a microSD card. The device is also the cheapest way to get voice assistant Alexa. The upgrade comes with three new color options — sage, plum and twilight blue as well as an introductory offer for a $10 credit to the Amazon App Store for those who purchase the device before June 6.

Although the battery life is less than its predecessor — seven hours opposed to eight — Amazon states the device is twice as durable as the latest iPad mini.

“Fire 7 is our best-selling tablet with tens of millions sold,” said Kevin Keith, Vice President, Amazon Devices. “For under $50, we’re making it even better for customers with a faster processor and 2x the storage, so customers can enjoy even more of their favorite entertainment at home and on-the-go. And, with hands-free access to Alexa on Fire 7, it’s never been easier to get the news, find a recipe, play music, and more.”

Some of the specs include front and rear-facing cameras; Amazon exclusive features, such as Prime Video downloads; Amazon FreeTime, which limits the time a child can use the device; and screen sharing.

The device is available for pre-order at and will begin shipping June 6.

Amazon has also announced its kids edition for the Fire 7 upgrade. The kids edition includes one free year of Amazon FreeTime, which includes unlimited access to more than 20,000 books, audible books, educational apps and games, and more curated just for kids. The device comes with a kid-proof case, guaranteed for two years. Amazon will replace it if a kid breaks it within that time.

The new device features the same storage capacity as the Fire 7 upgrade and supports up to two parent profiles on the device.

“Fire Kids Edition tablets are the #1 best-selling kids’ tablets in the U.S. and today, the Fire 7 Kids Edition is getting even better with a faster processor and a new kid-proof case with a stand,” said Kurt Beidler, Director of Kids and Family, Amazon. “Now, kids can easily prop up their tablet to watch their favorite videos, dance along to the Pinkfong! Baby Shark video, play an educational app like Solar System Explorer, or choose from over 1,000 kid-friendly Audible books to listen to. We think parents and kids alike are going to love it.”

The Fire 7 Kids Edition is also available for pre-order today for $99.99.
